Winters around Lake Norman are mild compared to the mountains, but we still get hard freezes — enough to crack an unprotected irrigation line or burn tender plantings. A little preparation in late fall saves expensive repairs in spring.
Before the first hard freeze
Have your irrigation system blown out and shut down so no water is left to freeze and split a pipe. Cut back perennials, clear leaves off the lawn so it can breathe, and add a fresh layer of mulch to insulate beds and roots.
A final mow at a slightly lower height and a winterizing fertilizer treatment help cool-season turf store energy for an early-spring green-up.
Don't forget the hardscape
Sealing pavers and clearing drainage before winter keeps freeze-thaw cycles from shifting stones and pooling water. If you have an outdoor kitchen or fire feature, drain and cover it for the season.
